What more can you do when your old friends are trying to discourage you? Do you give in to them or just be the light to them as a born again child?
I recently came across a famous Ghanaian Actor who just joined the Christendom. Fortunately or unfortunately, he made mention that his old friends have rejected him because he chose to walk on another path. I was glad when he found no problem with that. I guess he knew it’s far beneficial to have God on your side than to have friends by your side.
Now, let me come to you. Do you feel left alone, pressured or discouraged your old friends or family now that you are born again by? Do you think indeed you made the right choice? Well, I think you did make the right choice. Cos your choice is no different from mine. Not just because you made the same choice as mine but also because I have tasted from both sides and it’s been proven our path among the two is the best.
I want to tell you a truth. Now that you are born again, you’ve decided to be part of a new family. Meaning, you do not belong to your old friends and family anymore. For they wouldn’t contribute to your growth in all states (physical, spiritual, emotional etc). However, this doesn’t mean you completely abandon or reject your old friends, family or acquaintances. But you have to be the light to them. A light that will show them the right path and guide them. You know why? Because they are still in the dark. I mean to say it’s simply because they do not have Jesus in their hearts.
The question now is, what are you supposed to do when they (old friends or family) try to discourage you? One thing you must know is that not all facts are true. So when all your old friends gather to give you a sermon against your new life and walk, it still doesn’t mean they are right.
Bible says that, in the last days there will come scoffers who will do every wrong they can think of and laugh at the truth (2 Peter 3:3-4). Scoffers are people who speak derisively; mock; jeer. Only to discourage you and turn you into what they would prefer. However, you must remain standing. You must be unshakable. You must refuse to be moved by them. Since you cannot stop them from talking, just ignore and refuse to accept their counsel. Do not be “unequally yoked” with them. And maintain your stand for God and His word.
Unequal Yoking – What is it?
Years ago when farming was concerned, a farmer would yoke two animals of the same kind and then attach them to a plough. The two animals would plough the ground as they moved together in same direction. Now, this is called an “equal yoke” because the animals are of same kind. But in the case where both animals were different with an example of one being a donkey and the other a giraffe, it was called an ‘unequal yoke’. Because they weren’t of the same kind.
However, if this is linked to spirituality, it can be said that a Christian and a non-Christian companionship is unequally yoked. Hence, God is saying in 2 Corinthians 6:14-16 that we must not be unequally yoked with unbelievers.
What God wants is for us to be equally yoked with other Christians, doing the same things with them. Instead of being unequally yoked with non-believers. Know that, no matter how moral a person is, as long as he isn’t born again, he can’t be someone you will take counsel from and share your problems with. The only way by which one can be right with God is to be born again. For one who isn’t born again doesn’t have the right spirit with God.
Always remember that you’ve become the light of God to everyone in the dark. Share with them the Gospel so as they can also follow Jesus. Keeping in mind you always have to keep your hearts on Gods own. And He will see you through.
God bless you.
